2013 Santa Cruz Tallboy LT Complete Bike
Think of the new 29er Tallboy as the big-wheeled version of the Blur LT; it's got 5.3" of rear travel, uses the VPP suspension design and can take any fork between 130-150mm for All Mountain versatility. Throw into the mix some fat rubber on the 29er wheels and you've got an incredibly smooth-rolling trail bike that can tame the rockiest and rootiest trails with minimal fuss. Being the fastest growing segment in the mountain bike industry, the demand for 29er bikes like the Tallboy LT is increasing, as riders seek to increase their stability on the trail and benefit from a more controlled ride that improves momentum over their smaller wheeled cousins. A 26" bike will still suit those riders who are after a more "animated" ride that allows them to really throw the bike around and whip around tight singletrack, though if you feel you could benefit from the increased traction, lower centre of gravity and trail-gobbling ability of the big wheels, a 29er Tallboy LT will keep you glued to the dirt whether you're winding up a steep climb or gliding over the top of a rock garden. However, the oversized alloy tubing, a tapered head tube, 142x12mm rear dropouts, 15mm pivot axles and the stout forged alloy suspension links add up to a rigid frame that belies its big wheels with responsive handling. Combine that with Santa Cruz sorted geometry that maximises the fun factor, and you've got a playful big-wheeler that is almost impossible to put a foot wrong with. There are a multitude of build options with the Tallboy LT, as with every Santa Cruz bike, and you can spec a 130 or 150mm travel fork up front, depending on the attitude you want the bike to have: 130mm for trail and enduro style riding or 150mm for additional stability on the faster more technical courses.

From Santa Cruz:

"With 29" wheels finding greater acceptance amongst more and more riders, it was only a matter of time before some of those riders began pushing their boundaries and demanding a bike that was designed for more brutal terrain. The new Tallboy LT is our offering to those riders: aggressive geometry, 135mm VPP suspension travel, adjsutable angular contact lower pivot bearings with recesssed grease ports, custom drawn aluminium tubing, tapered headtube and ISCG 05 mounts. Maintaining the climb happy pedalling characteristics of all our VPP bikes, the Tallboy LT takes the go anywhere ethos of the original Tallboy and brings along a whole lot more game when the trail points downward and gets steep and chunky. It's a new breed of big wheeled trail bike."

D AM 29" Build:
The All Mountain kit features a burly wheelset with fat Maxxis Ardent tyres that are designed to help keep you in touch with the ground on technical terrain. If your riding conditions demand more from your bike to stand up to rockier terrain or you're just after a more solid bike for the rigours of back country riding, the D AM build is ideal. In addition to the wheels, the AM kit gets 710 wide RaceFace handlebars and a shorter stem for maintaining control on steep descents. Braking duties are handled by Avid Elixir disc brakes that feature a larger 180mm rotor up front for more braking bite. Shifting duties are taken care of by a 10 speed SRAM drivetrain that gets a triple crankset with a low 22t granny gear for winching your way up steep climbs before blasting down the other side. Versatility is key with the AM build, and there is nothing that comes close to the performance-per-dollar than the 'D' kit here.
  • SRAM 3x10 Speed Drivetrain with X7 Rear Derailleur, X5 Shifters and 2-piece X5 (44/33/22t) Crankset
  • Avid Elixir 1 Hydraulic Disc Brakes with 180mm Front and 160mm Rear Disc Rotors
  • Raceface Ride Seatpost, Stem and 710mm Low-Rise Bars with Lizard Skin "494" Grips
  • WTB ST i23 Wheelset with Tubeless Compatible Rims, Shimano Deore XT QR15 Front Hub and SLX 142x12mm Rear Hub
  • Maxxis Ardent 2.25" Tyres

R AM 29" Build:
Compared to the entry level 'D' kit, the R AM built steps up the quality with a Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain that gets the impressive Shadow Plus SLX rear derailleur for secure chain management when you're banging down a rocky descent. The 2-piece Shimano crankset gets a smooth sealed bearing bottom bracket and the triple chainring setup means you've got a wide range of gears for mastering any mountain. (MM Hot Tip: If you don't use the big 42t chainring, swap it out for a bashguard for more ground clearance, extra protection of the chainrings and a sweet 2x10 setup). Disc brakes are the latest Elixir 5 models from Avid that boast oodles of power and beautiful modulation that's courtesy of the TaperBore internals and a larger 180mm rotor up front. Perhaps an underrated area according to Santa Cruz, the wheelset on the 'R' build kit is actually handbuild in their Californian factory. The wheels comprise of a Mavic EN321 rim that is substantially wider and stronger than the comparable rims on the R XC kit, and they're laced to thru-axle Shimano hubs front & rear to keep everything laterally stiff. Making the most of the stiff frame and wheels, wider Maxxis High Roller tyres increase cornering grip over skinnier XC tyres, especially in loose terrain.
  • Shimano 3x10 Speed XT/SLX Drivetrain with M552 (42/32/24t) Crankset and SLX Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur
  • Avid Elixir 5 Hydraulic Disc Brakes with 180mm Front and 160mm Rear Disc Rotors
  • Raceface Ride 710mm Low-Rise Bars, Truvativ AKA Stem and Lizard Skin "494" Grips
  • Raceface Ride Seatpost and WTB Volt Race Saddle
  • WTB ST i23 Wheelset with Tubeless Compatible Rims, Shimano Deore XT QR15 Front Hub and SLX 142x12mm Rear Hub
  • Maxxis Ardent 2.25" UST Tubeless Tyres

SPX AM 29" Build:
While the SPX kit is in the middle of the price range, it's performance is anything but and is far closer to XTR performance than the dollar figure would suggest. With a full Shimano Deore XT drivetrain and brakeset, the SPX kit gives a high quality tick for every component and makes the most of the high tech Santa Cruz frameset. New for 2013 is the double crankset up front, which allows for less front shifting and improved ground clearance compared to a 3x10 setup. Bearing in mind the All Mountain nature of the build kit, Santa Cruz have also specced the Shadow Plus rear derailleur and an E*13 chain guide that works smoothly with the front derailleur to allow for easy shifting, while keeping a better hold on the chain. Not skimping in the wheel department, Santa Cruz have handbuilt just for you a custom WTB wheelset complete with DT Swiss 350 hubs and Frequency Team i23 rims. The hubs match up the frames 142x12mm rear thru-axle and the forks 15mm thru-axle for a super stiff and laterally rigid package. Because the WTB rims are tubeless compatible, you get chubby 2.35" High Roller tyres from Maxxis that use the UST Tubeless casing, to help reduce pinch flats and the ability to run lower pressures. This burlier wheelset and fat rubber helps distinguish the 'AM' kit from the 'XC' build, as do the wider Easton Haven handlebars that assist with high speed control. Rock solid Shimano Deore XT brakes ooze power when paired up with the 180mm rotor up front, and make for trouble-free performance. Topped off with a Thomson seatpost and Lizard Skin 'Peaty' lock-on grips, there is really no need to upgrade anything on the SPX kit out of the box.
  • Shimano 2x10 Speed Deore XT Drivetrain with 26/38t Crankset and XT Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur
  • E*13 TRS+ Dual Guide Chain Device
  • Shimano XT Trail Hydraulic Disc Brakes with 180mm Front and 160mm Rear Ice Tech Rotors
  • Truvativ AKA Stem and Easton Haven 711mm Wide Low-Rise Handlebars
  • Thomson Elite Seatpost with WTB Volt Team Saddle
  • Custom WTB Wheelset with Frequency Team i23 Rims, DT Swiss 350 QR15 Front Hub and 142x12mm Rear Hub
  • Maxxis Ardent 2.25" UST Tubeless Tyres

XX1 AM 29" Build:
A brand new option for 2013 Santa Cruz bikes, the amazing SRAM XX1 groupset is now available for those wanting to ditch the front derailleur and enjoy the simplicity of a single-ring drivetrain. Utilising a massive 10-42t cassette out back, the XX1 system features a clutch-equipped rear derailleur, a chainring with a specially designed teeth profile and a specific 11 speed chain that are all designed to integrate seamlessly to maximise chain security for a quiet and efficient ride. This new 11-speed drivetrain is proving to be popular with a wide range of riders due to its light overall weight, simplicity and dependability in rough terrain and as such is being seen on superlight XC race bikes as well as 7" travel Super D monsters. The All Mountain XX1 build kit elects to use a lightweight E*13 XCX upper guide for the XX1 cranks, more for peace of mind than anything else as it pretty much guarantees that the chain cannot come off. The XX1 AM's big party trick however is the inclusion of a RockShox Reverb dropper post. With its smooth hydraulic actuation, the Reverb allows you to drop or raise the saddle at the flick of a button on the handlebar so that you can concentrate on the trail ahead. Braking duties are handled by the smooth XTR Trail brakes that get Ice Tech rotors and pads for fade-resistance on long descents.
  • SRAM XX1 1x11 Speed Drivetrain w/34t chainring, E*13 XCX Chainguide and 10-42t Cassette
  • Shimano XTR Trail Hydraulic Disc Brakes with 180/160mm Ice Tech Rotors
  • Thomson Elite Stem with Haven Carbon 711mm Riserbar
  • RockShox Reverb Height-Adjustable Seatpost with WTB Volt SLT Ti Saddle
  • Cane Creek 110 Headset
  • Custom WTB Wheelset with Frequency Team i23 Rims, DT Swiss 240s QR15 Front Hub and 142x12mm Rear Hub
  • Maxxis High Roller 2.35" UST Tubeless Tyres
  • Optional: ENVE Wheelset Upgrade w/ENVE AM Carbon Rims laced to DT Swiss 240s Hubs Front & Rear

XTR AM 29" Build:
The top of the Santa Cruz build kit tree, the XTR groupset is regarded as having the best shifting and braking components available to humans, and we would have to agree. With it's trick carbon hybrid chainrings, the titanium-enhanced 10 speed cassette and ceramic bearings, it's the high-tech materials and build quality that takes XTR performance to a new level, and weight down below anything else available. While the shifting and braking is impressive on the XTR kit, it's the wheels that we're most excited about, as they are handbuilt in the Santa Cruz factory unlike many other brands that use machine-built wheels. For the rolling stock, you get a choice between WTB i23 rims or the extremely bling-tastic ENVE carbon hoops. Both are tubeless compatible and are paired up to fat Maxxis High Roller UST tyres, and they both get laced to Swiss made 240s hubs with thru-axle compatibility. However, the super stiff Carbon ENVE AM rims boost the bikes acceleration and improve handling thanks to their direct and responsive ride quality. If you can plump up for the carbon wheels, it will be without doubt the best and most noticeable upgrade you can make to your Santa Cruz! Not to be forgotten, the AM kit also features the RockShox Reverb height-adjustable seatpost, that allows you to drop your saddle up to 5" at the flick of the handlebar remote lever. If your terrain is steeper and you ride harder than most of your XC buddies, the AM build will suit you without getting something that is overweight and sluggish.
  • Shimano 2x10 Speed XTR Drivetrain with 26/38t Crankset and XTR Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur
