2013 Santa Cruz Tallboy LT Carbon
Like the Blur giving birth to separate XC and LT versions over the years, the Tallboy LT is the natural evolution of the original Tallboy 29er. Beefed up on travel, frame strength and fork capability, the Tallboy LT is one of the most capable long-travel big wheelers on the market and yet it manages to somehow come in at under 2.5kg on the scales - and that's
with
shock! Engineered from the latest Carbon Fiber blend, the Tallboy takes on board all of the latest construction technologies to maximise strength and durability whilst trimming some substantial grams over the alluminum model. Like the new V-10 Carbon, the Blur XC and the Nomad, the Tallboy utilises some unique construction methods such as the one piece lay-up and curing, the use of continuous fibres around key tube junctions and a fiber compaction process that allows for minute control over the external and internal shape of each frame. This stiff carbon main frame with its 4 oversized 15mm aluminum pivot axles, stout mini links and solid rear triangle makes for an impressive ride that will have your wheels tracking straighter and with less deflection when railing berms and technical rock gardens. Adding to the frames lateral rigidity is the use of a tapered head tube and a dedicated 142x12mm rear thru-axle that also makes the most of modern 29er forks and wheelsets. New for 2013 is the move to the CTD Fox rear shock that provides 3 distinct settings for the rear suspension; 'Climb', 'Trail' and 'Descend', so you can select the right compression dampening for the trail ahead. The Factory-level shock gets the gold Kashima treatment for slippery smooth performance and is also custom tuned internally specifically for the VPP suspension, so you get taught pedalling performance with plenty of control on the bigger hits. It all adds up to a mega-capable mountain bike that is made all the more distinctive thanks to Santa Cruz' trademark geometry that ensures the Tallboy LT C is a wickedly fun machine.
From
Santa Cruz
:
"We waved the carbon fibre wand at the new Tallboy LT, offering all the same features, and ended up with a frame that weighs 5.35 pounds with a shock bolted in there. This is not a typo, 135mm travel, VPP suspension, great big wheels, 142 x 12 rear axle, plenty of beef where it counts and the damn thing only weighs 5.35 pounds (this is worth repeating). That's obscenely light for this type of bike. In spite of this feathery weight, this is still an aggressive all mountain contender and as such is stiff and strong enough to devour anything you throw at it without so much as a twitch."
Virtual Pivot Point
The patented VPP suspension by Santa Cruz is characterized by 2 counter-rotating mini links that separate the front triangle from the solid rear swingarm. By creating a "virtual pivot point" for the rear suspension, instead of the fixed main pivot like on a Superlight or Heckler, the Santa Cruz engineers are able to reduce the effect that chain torque (pedaling forces) has on the rear suspension, effectively reducing the pedal "bob" that you would normally get on a dually. In fact, we would encourage you to get out of the saddle and hammer the pedals on a VPP bike to see just how efficient the suspension really is. By reducing the negative effects your pedaling has on the suspension, you are able to climb faster, sprint harder and get more power to the rear wheel in a much wider variety of trail situations - all with less effort. The other cool feature to the VPP suspension is the path that the rear axle takes as it compresses through the travel, allowing for a balance between pedal efficiency and the ability to absorb those square-edge hits on rocks and roots. It all adds up to suspension that does its thing without you having to worry about flicking levers or adjusting your riding style, whether you're on a buff switchback climb or descending a fast-paced rock garden. Santa Cruz have also gone out of their way to ensure that your VPP bike is easy to maintain, with clever grease ports for the lower links bearings and durable hardware that uses basic hex keys to strip down the suspension, all without having to remove the cranks or BB cups. Combined with the stout links and oversized aluminum pivot axles, the VPP design gives you quality suspension in a laterally stiff frame that is easy to maintain and will last you for years to come.
