Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon The Tallboy is Santa Cruz's introduction into the world of 29er bikes, and they have definitely started with a bang! Weighing in at just 5 pounds for the frame and shock, the carbon Tallboy has achieved an incredible weight for a 29er, though more impressive is Santa Cruz's claim that it is stronger and stiffer than any other 29er available, regardless of its weight. Santa Cruz Bicycles are really pushing the boundaries with their carbon frames, with some unique construction methods such as the one piece lay-up and curing, the use of continuous fibres around key tube junctions and a fiber compaction process that allows for minute control over the external and internal shape of each frame. As a result, they are creating some of the strongest and stiffest carbon fiber frames on the market, which is ideal for a 29er frame as they traditionally suffer from additional flex due to the longer frame members and larger wheels. This stiff carbon main frame with its 4 oversized 15mm aluminum pivot axles, stout mini links and solid rear carbon triangle makes for an impressive ride that will have your wheels tracking straighter and with less deflection when railing berms and technical rock gardens. With 100mm (4") of VPP travel out back and the capability to take a 100-120mm fork up front with its Tapered headtube, the Tallboy is ideal for XC and trail riding whether you want to front up at the race course, or just hit the local trail head and leave your mates in a cloud of dust. Whatever your flavour, you can be confident that the Tallboy, like every Santa Cruz bike, is built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers and as a result, is super fun ride. From Santa Cruz: “Combining the acclaimed performance and durability of the latest VPP suspension with a sophisticated carbon fiber chassis and a set of big 29” wheels, we present the Tallboy. The curvaceous carbon fiber frame is more than just a pretty face: it offers amazing stiffness and strength while keeping weight feathery light. That, plus 100mm of rear wheel travel paired with fast rolling large diameter wheels spells out one thing: Long Haul Trucker.” Virtual Pivot Point The patented VPP suspension by Santa Cruz is characterized by 2 counter-rotating mini links that separate the front triangle from the solid rear swingarm. By creating a "virtual pivot point" for the rear suspension, instead of the fixed main pivot like on a Superlight or Heckler, the Santa Cruz engineers are able to reduce the effect that chain torque (pedaling forces) has on the rear suspension, effectively reducing the pedal "bob" that you would normally get on a dually. In fact, we would encourage you to get out of the saddle and hammer the pedals on a VPP bike to see just how efficient the suspension really is. By reducing the negative effects your pedaling has on the suspension, you are able to climb faster, sprint harder and get more power to the rear wheel in a much wider variety of trail situations - all with less effort. The other cool feature to the VPP suspension is the path that the rear axle takes as it compresses through the travel, allowing for a balance between pedal efficiency and the ability to absorb those square-edge hits on rocks and roots. It all adds up to suspension that does its thing without you having to worry about flicking levers or adjusting your riding style, whether you're on a buff switchback climb or descending a fast-paced rock garden. Santa Cruz have also gone out of their way to ensure that your VPP bike is easy to maintain, with clever grease ports for the lower links bearings and durable hardware that uses basic hex keys to strip down the suspension, all without having to remove the cranks or BB cups. Combined with the stout links and oversized aluminum pivot axles, the VPP design gives you quality suspension in a laterally stiff frame that is easy to maintain and will last you for years to come.
